Karen Atkinson, SMEC Deputy Chief Operating Officer - Southeast Asia, recently visited Rio de Janeiro to attend the International Hydropower Association (IHA) Annual Board Meeting. Karen has been a member of the IHA Board since October 2021, helping shape and guide IHA’s work at a crucial time of rapid transition towards clean energy. IHA is recognised as a leading voice in promoting sustainable practices across the sector.

The Roads and Highways Department, Bangladesh has appointed SMEC along with ACE and SYSTRA S. A (France) to undertake detailed feasibility studies and design for 14 planned bridges across the country. The bridges will be long span design and four or more lanes wide.

SMEC recently celebrated the official opening of the Mwami/Mchinji One Stop Border Post (OSBP), a vital part of the Nacala transport corridor servicing the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

SMEC, along with Surbana Jurong, has been engaged to carry out a masterplan study for the Lake Volta region. The project will deliver an integrated, long-term Regional Development Plan, exploring the economic potential of Lake Volta and surrounding areas while protecting its natural environment.

Located in the north-eastern part of the metropolis, the 2,659 ha La Mesa Watershed Reservation is a protected area that contains the last remaining rainforest of its size surrounding the La Mesa Dam and Reservoir, the primary source of potable drinking water for 12 million residents in Metro Manila. The area comprises a variety of ecosystems that is home to many indigenous and endemic species of flora and fauna.

This role builds on our extensive track record as a provider of Independent Certification services on major infrastructure projects and will facilitate improved transport connections and safety benefits for our community

The construction of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel started back in 2017. SMEC, together with project partners, provided design review and supervision consultancy services. Around 94% construction works of the two tunnels have been completed, with electrical and mechanical work are still in progress.

Since 2001, the SMEC Foundation, in coordination with SMEC’s Divisional CSR Committees and in partnership with reputable not-for-profit organisations, has provided small-scale grants for a number of health and education initiatives in its areas of operation as part of its commitment to deliver the best possible social and development outcomes for communities in need.
