SMEC in Bhutan
SMEC has operated in Bhutan since 1984, implementing the Road Construction Mechanisation Review project. The project involved the evaluation of a number of road construction mechanisation projects carried out (over an 11 year period) under a United Nations Development Program funded project commenced in 1973. SMEC formulated recommendations for future assistance to the Bhutan Public Works Department to continue the expansion of the road network.
Since then, SMEC has undertaken numerous Transport sector projects in Bhutan, including the design of approximately 60km of feeder roads and planning maintenance activities for 2,700km of Bhutan’s national road network. SMEC is also a dominant player in Bhutan’s energy sector, providing feasibility studies and detailed designs for the Rural Electrification and Network Expansion Project.
