Chief Technical Principal – Dams & Hydropower

Andreas joined SMEC in 1989 and has over 35 years’ experience in his profession providing extensive international design and build experience on a variety of hydropower and dam projects around the world.

Andreas brings a wealth of experience in all aspects of civil structures for hydro-electric, water supply and flood control projects.  This includes preparation of feasibility studies, detail design and preparation of contract documents for dams with earth fill, concrete gravity, roller compacted concrete and concrete-faced rock fill dams, power stations, spillways, diversion arrangements and penstocks.

Andreas fulfilled his dream of working in developing countries, delivering dam and hydropower projects in Papua New Guinea, Laos, Malaysia, Sudan, Nepal and Botswana. He has since retuned to Australia to fulfill a technical role in Snowy 2.0, the first expansion of the iconic Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme.

He is a member of the Institution of Engineers in Australia and holds a Bachelor of Business degree from Deakin University, Australia as well as a Civil Engineer (equivalent to Master Degree) from Karlsruhe, Germany.

I chose hydro and dam engineering as a career because it offered me the opportunity to be involved in projects which, I believe, make a long-lasting contribution to a society’s development, particularly in developing countries.”
