In May 2024, SMEC South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Urban Development team, along with SMEC South Africa’s CEO and Operations Director for Transport (AMEP & AECA), Logashri Sewnarain, conducted a site visit to one of the region’s flagship projects – the Upgrade of Kassier Road in Ntshongweni, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The infrastructure upgrades to Kassier Road are necessitated by the planned Westown Development, a mixed-use property and lifestyle development strategically located off the N3 between Pietermaritzburg and Durban. The first phase of the development, the retail hub of Westown Square, is scheduled to open on 27 March 2025.

SMEC South Africa’s scope of work encompasses the construction of two new bridges and a complete overhaul of the existing two-lane Kassier Road, expanding it to four lanes with a centre median across the M13 and N3. Additionally, a new pedestrian bridge will be constructed over the N3, along with a new loop ramp and bridge over Kassier Road, providing direct access to Westown.

The visit provided the team with direct insight into the project’s scope and the complexities involved. The focus areas included the substantial earthworks embankments, varying in-situ material quality, and two major bridge structures.

The hands-on experience provided an opportunity for our team to appreciate the scale and impact of the project and to witness the tangible results of their work. Observing our designs materialise reinforces the significance of our contributions to infrastructure improvement in the KwaZulu-Natal region.
