SMEC
appointed
as
Project
Verifier
for
Singleton
Bypass
Project
SMEC Australia are pleased to announce, we have been awarded as the Project Verifier for New England Highway - Singleton Bypass Project, the largest road infrastructure investment in Singleton's history.

As Project Verifier SMEC is providing critical design review and construction surveillance services for Transport for NSW and ACCIONA. Initial works commenced in December 2023 with SMEC being led by experienced Project Design Verifier, Tara Matkovich.

The New England Highway is part of the inland Sydney to Brisbane National Land Transport Network with the primary route connecting the Upper Hunter with Maitland and Newcastle. The highway passes through the centre of Singleton, carrying around 26,000 vehicles including more than 3,700 heavy vehicles each day.

Projections indicate a rise in traffic volumes over the next quarter-century. To address this, the Singleton Bypass aims to enhance the efficiency of freight movement and streamline travel for both current and future traffic demands. The eight-kilometre bypass is designed to circumvent five sets of traffic lights in the Central Business District (CBD), improving traffic flow, travel times and safety for local and interstate motorists.

As part of the New England Highway program of works, this is a critical project to alleviate the current and projected traffic volumes that currently pass through the centre of Singleton and further underscores SMEC commitment to working with our clients and partners in regional New South Wales and supporting our valued communities.
— Ian Lane, SMEC National Sector Leader – IV & Construction Services

New England Highway – Singleton Bypass Project is expected to open to traffic in late 2026.
