SMEC was engaged to provide the planning, preliminary and detailed design of the bulk infrastructure for all bulk earthworks, road access, stormwater systems, sanitation, irrigation and water supply. Cornubia Precinct was awarded the Best Priority Project at the 2013 Govan Mbeki Awards. The purpose of the Govan Mbeki Awards is to promote and instill a culture of excellence in the delivery of quality human settlements in South Africa.

Cornubia Precinct is a 1,200 hectare sustainable integrated human settlement project located north of Durban in South Africa.

Due to the vast size of the Cornubia Precinct, the project comprises a range of industrial, residential and commercial developments.

The project is a joint venture between Tongaat Hulett Developments and the eThekwini Municipality, and aims to address the needs of an ever increasing population, a problem faced by all of South Africa’s major cities. Cornubia has the potential to yield 25,000 residential units (of which 15,000 units will be developed in phases over the next 15 to 20 years).

The development is situated between newly affluent precincts and historically disadvantaged areas which face various social, economic, and environmental challenges. Despite these challenges, Cornubia seeks to provide a harmonious living environment and high quality of life with equal opportunities for all citizens.
