The initial work including new terminal buildings, parking areas and security on the landside as well as the rehabilitation and extension of the main runway. Rehabilitation involved recycling the existing pavement using foamed bitumen and cement and a double layer asphalt surface with a Bitumen-rubber Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer (SAMI). New link taxiways were provided as well as improved hard-standing and turning areas. In addition, shoulders and runway lighting and marking were provided throughout and a tower-air communication system was installed. The terminal building was then enlarged and the runway and taxiways widened to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft.
