Why did you choose SMEC?
I started at SMEC at the end of my 2nd year of engineering and chose SMEC because I really wanted the opportunity to work in bridge design. The size of the team and the record of bridge experience meant that I’d have the chance to work on bridge projects varying in size and complexity.
What do you enjoy most about your internship / graduate program at SMEC?
While I was an undergraduate I really appreciated the flexibility that SMEC and my team gave me to work part time during my degree. Since being a graduate I’ve enjoyed the responsibility of leading my own design work, including as a design lead delivering my own bridge packages and working on a wide range of projects across Australia.
What surprised you about your time at SMEC so far?
The amount you can learn within a couple of years! Comparing to 2018 when I started at SMEC, I’m proud of the work that I’m now achieving and the role that I offer within the team. There is a fantastic potential for growth within a short period of time when you have the right people and projects open to you.
At this stage, where do you think your SMEC story is going to take you?
Hopefully SMEC will continue to give me opportunities to grow as an engineer, develop my technical skills sets and work with great people!
What advice would you offer to graduates?
Accept and ask for help whenever you can – being a graduate is a great time to absorb as much information as you can and to learn from the people in your team. Make yourself visible within the company and say yes to opportunities that are presented to you. There are interesting projects and programs running at SMEC all the time – find what you’re interested in and ask to be involved.
