Funded directly by the Government of Georgia, under the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, it is a strategic project of economic, political and social importance—not only for the country, but also for the broader region.
The Anaklia port provides the shortest transit link to connect Central Asia with Europe and East Asia. It is part of Corridor 2, in the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program.
Once complete, the port will be the main imports gateway for approximately 17 million inhabitants of landlocked Caucasus and Central Asian countries and will also provide critical supply routes for nearly 146 million people living within the immediate region of the port.
Over 14 months, SMEC’s teams completed detailed design of the main access road and rail link to the port, which has been approved by our client and the State Certified Expertise of Georgia.
The design covers nearly 18 kilometers of road and rail links and supporting infrastructure, including access to local roads; rail stations; power supply and communications; lighting; and drainage channels.
The rail link design included the roadbed and railway superstructure; fiber-optic cable; 11 underpasses; 21 drainage channels; electrification and communications; and connections at Anaklia and Khobi stations and Khamiskuri Junction.
SMEC’s road link design included the main access road and local roads parallel to the access road. Along with substations and power supply, it also features lighting; 11 underpasses; 35 drainage channels; and 5 overpasses.
Scope for both road and rail components included geodesic, geological, geotechnical, archaeological and hydrological surveys.
