SMEC was engaged by United Gulf Construction Company Kuwait as the civil and structural designer for tender design and preparation for the expansion of the Kuwait International Airport.

In 2011 the Kuwaiti Government announced plans to expand the airport to cater for an increase in the passenger handling capacity from 9 million to 14 million passengers annually. SMEC delivered a tender design which encompassed a number of different design disciplines. These included pavement design, utility relocation, airfield marking, airfield and substation lighting, electrical system of aprons, airfield signage, stormwater drainage system, firefighting system, access roads, and geo-physical survey.

 

Objectives of the project are to:

  • Increase the capacity of the airport to cater for the world’s largest aircraft including the Boeing B777-300ER (353 tonnes), the Airbus A340-500 (365 tonnes) and the Airbus A380 (562 tonnes)
  • Cater for a significant increase in passenger volumes and potential future expansion.
