The Montrose Interchange Upgrade project has won the CESA award of excellence for projects valued between R50 million and R250 million.

Initiated by Trans African Concessions (Pty) Ltd., the Montrose Interchange is a key component of the Maputo Development Corridor, addressing increasing traffic demands driven by tourism and trade between South Africa, Mozambique and Botswana.

The project required an overhaul of the existing at-grade T-junction, built in the 1970s, prompting the need for a comprehensive infrastructure solution. As lead consulting engineer, SMEC oversaw engineering design and supervision across the entire project lifecycle from inception in January 2018 to completion in September 2023. The project involved the realignment and upgrade of 600 metres of the existing road, construction of four new interchange ramps, and the widening of the Crocodile River Bridge from two lanes to five.

We are incredibly proud of the positive social impact this project has had on the Mbombela communities, including job creation and the development of local SMMEs. This award is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the SMEC team and our commitment to engineering positive change.
