SMEC actively participated in the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Asia and the Pacific Transport Forum 2024, held from 14 to 15 May at the ADB Headquarters in Manila, Philippines. The forum, themed “Clean Transport for All,” aimed to address critical issues and emerging solutions in the transport sector, aligning with ADB’s mission to promote sustainable development across the region. SMEC’s involvement underscored its commitment to advancing cleaner and more efficient transport systems.

Representing SMEC at the forum were Wim Frencken (Transport Manager Pacific and Country Manager Fiji), Larry Pastrana (SMEC Philippines President and Country Manager), Warren Gregory Wood (Team Leader CCLEX Project), and Lara Luis (Operations Manager Pacific). Their participation highlighted SMEC’s dedication to fostering dialogue and collaboration towards sustainable transport solutions.

 

The ADB forum provided a platform for stakeholders to exchange insights, showcase technical expertise and explore avenues for enhancing transport infrastructure and services. It facilitated discussions on challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and charted pathways for resilient and sustainable transport solutions in the post-pandemic era.

 

Reflecting on their participation in the forum, the SMEC team identified five key takeaways:

 

  • Integrated Approach to Sustainable Transport: The forum emphasised the importance of adopting an integrated approach to sustainable transport, encompassing multimodal solutions, infrastructure development and policy frameworks. SMEC recognises the need for holistic strategies to address environmental concerns, promote social inclusivity and enhance economic efficiency in transport planning and implementation.
  • Climate Resilience and Adaptation: Discussions highlighted the imperative requirements of climate resilience and adaptation in transport infrastructure projects. SMEC remains committed to integrating climate risk assessments, green technologies and nature-based solutions into its projects, aligning with global efforts to mitigate climate change impacts and build resilient communities.
  • Digital Innovation in Transport: The forum showcased the transformative potential of digital innovation in optimising transport systems and enhancing connectivity. SMEC acknowledges the role of digital technologies, such as intelligent transportation systems and data analytics, in improving operational efficiency, safety and user experience across diverse transport modes.
  • Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) for Infrastructure Development: PPP emerged as a viable mechanism for accelerating infrastructure development and financing in the transport sector. SMEC recognises the importance of fostering collaboration between public and private stakeholders to mobilise resources, manage risks and deliver sustainable transport solutions that meet the evolving needs of communities.
  • Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing: Capacity development workshops underscored the significance of knowledge sharing, skills training and institutional strengthening in building resilient and responsive transport systems. SMEC remains committed to supporting capacity-building initiatives and facilitating knowledge exchange among stakeholders to foster innovation and best practices in the transport sector.

 

SMEC’s engagement in the ADB Transport Forum in Manila reaffirms it dedication to advancing clean and sustainable transport solutions across the Asia-Pacific region. By leveraging expertise, fostering partnerships and embracing innovation, the company aims to contribute towards building resilient, inclusive, and environmentally sound transport infrastructure for future generations.

 

Pacific Infrastructure Business Opportunities Seminar in Fiji

 

Continuing SMEC’s commitment to regional development, Wim also attended the Pacific Infrastructure Business Opportunities Seminar in Fiji a week later. This key event for contractors and consultants interested in Pacific infrastructure development was held from 22 to 24 May. It featured discussions on transport, energy, water, ICT and social infrastructure development. The event included briefings, feedback sessions and networking opportunities to strengthen public and private sector collaboration. Panels highlighted integrating environmental, social, and economic considerations into procurement systems to maximise positive impacts and support sustainable infrastructure in the Pacific.
