Construction of Freeway TR9/1 Windhoek – Hosea Kutako International Airport
VKE, part of the SMEC group, was appointed in 2011 to carry out the feasibility study, and subsequently, engineering design and contract administration for the upgrade to dual-carriageway freeway of Trunk Road (TR)9/1 between Windhoek and the Hosea Kutako International Airport.

Nowra Bridge Project Verification
The Nowra Bridge was listed as a key priority in the Australian Infrastructure 2020 Priority List. Working alongside delivery partners Fulton Hogan and Transport of New South Wales (TfNSW), SMEC was appointed to deliver necessary project verification servicers to create long-lasting project value.

Upgrading the Salang Corridor
SMEC is undertaking the feasibility study and detailed engineering design to upgrade the Salang tunnel and roads. Extensive high altitude geological site investigations including mapping, drilling and laboratory testing have been a crucial part of the feasibility study.

Construction of a Freeway between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund
The upgrading of the route between the port city of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund has been considered since at least the late 1990s when a feasibility study for the upgrade of the coastal road, TR2/1, was commissioned. The design by SMEC includes six interchanges of various geometric complexity and seven prestressed interchange bridges.

Georgia Transport Connectivity Project
The Georgia Transport Connectivity Project, financed by the EU and its Bank the EIB, will substantially enhance the transport safety and country’s economic growth with vital transport and trade links. Through targeted interventions on the extended Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) in Georgia, the project aims to substantially enhance local mobility as well as global connectivity to Europe.

SMEC pushed through technical boundaries to develop and implement innovative solutions on the Frenchman’s Creek Bridge. SMEC presented a new proposal to replace the road bridge within a short 72-hour road closure period.

West Gate Distributor – Shepherds Bridge
SMEC delivered a critical link from Melbourne’s CBD to the Western Suburbs when working on the West Gate Distributor – Shepherds Bridge. SMEC’s specialist team of engineers designed and built a new pedestrian bridge, that reduced the traffic load on the bridge and resolved the complex surrounding brownfield environment.
