SMEC in Cambodia
SMEC has operated in Cambodia since 1964. SMEC’s first project in Cambodia was a major hydropower and irrigation project on the Prek Thnot River, a tributary of the Mekong. However, political unrest caused its abandonment in 1975. SMEC returned to Cambodia in 1989 – one of the first companies to do so – and has maintained a presence there ever since.
Since then, SMEC has been involved in road restoration projects, emergency flood rehabilitation, hydropower projects, an irrigation and rural infrastructure improvement project, reconstruction of a health centre and assistance in development of Cambodia’s justice system. SMEC has experience in the Transport, Water, Environment, Energy and Education, Governance and Government Advisory sectors in Cambodia.
