SMEC in Kiribati
SMEC has operated in Kiribati since 1989, with the Tarawa Reticulation Improvement Project. The project involved the design, planning and construction of the South Tarawa fresh water reticulation scheme. The scheme required excavation of the existing pipeline and replacement with approximately 100 km of new pipes.
SMEC has continued its dominance in the Kiribati water sector, undertaking benchmarking of the performance of water utilities. Prior to this benchmarking exercise, limited availability of reliable information on water utilities performance across the Pacific was posing significant challenges to improvement and institutional reform.
SMEC is undertaking project management, community engagement and capacity development projects in Kiribati.
