Ballina Bypass
As part of the Ballina Bypass Alliance, SMEC delivered detailed design services for a variety of project principles. The project value delivered by SMEC can be seen through the roads, structures, pavements, geotechnical solutions and confirmed compliance with related technical, environmental, and authority requirements.

The $560 million Ballina Bypass project extends from the Bruxner Highway to Ross Lane and is part of the Pacific Highway upgrade between Hexham and the Queensland border. New South Wales Roads and Maritime Service found complexities during the construction process in the surrounding natural environment. These challenges comprised of varying depths of soft soil, which in turn required various ground treatment technologies. The New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services were also confronted with aggressive natural environments which affected durability, traffic staging and management and minimising flood impacts from the bypass construction.

Various ground and soil treatments

In order to overcome the challenges faced by the client, SMEC’s specialist’s geotechnics team successfully provided appropriate solutions to the aggressive natural environment conditions through the application of various ground and soil treatments. Adopting the required treatments ensured improved soil and construction conditions during the Ballina Bypass.
