Banora Point Upgrade
SMEC delivered innovative solutions to solve complex and critical transportation links at Banora Point. SMEC provided traffic engineering and design services for roads, structures, drainage works, and associated infrastructure that enabled project success.

SMEC partnered with Abigroup and Seymour-Whyte to deliver this complex design and construction project for New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services. The project involved the upgrade of 2.5 km of the Pacific Highway, a critical transport link between Sydney and Brisbane. Several challenges were faced during the life cycle of the project including:

  • Highly complex traffic management requirements
  • Environmental management to minimise noise and vibration, and prevent erosion and sediment loss
  • Geotechnical complex main cutting which required both contiguous pile and soil nail retaining walls in the deep cutting.

Successful project delivery

With over 70,000 vehicles using this stretch of road every day, the completion of the Banora Point Upgrade has improved both efficiency and safety on the Pacific Highway. SMEC helped delivered the following:

  • A six-lane divided carriageway with an improved alignment
  • A three-lane 330 m long viaduct
  • Four twin overbridges and two single overbridges

Reshaping adjacent Wilson Park, including the provision of a shared pedestrian and bicycle path across a 75 m wide land bridge.
