The Monash Freeway Upgrade Stage 1 comprised 30 km of new lanes and the installation of 44 km of Freeway Management System (FMS).

The freeway was widened from four to five lanes East Link and the South Gippsland Freeway at Doveton, and from two to three lanes between the South Gippsland Freeway and Clyde Road in Berwick. Nine bridges from East Link to Clyde Road were widened to carry the additional lanes with strengthening required for two of the structures.

Seventy-five portal frame gantries and cantilever structures were required to support the rollout of the Lane Use Management System (LUMS) and Freeway Ramp Signal upgrades. SMEC provided design services of the project in the following areas; roads, bridges, geotechnical, ITS, drainage, pavement, traffic, signs and other road furniture.

Objectives of the project are to:

  • The works have helped to meet increased travel demand, increased travel time reliability, improve connectivity between economic clusters, enhance safety and access to services.
