The Sydney Metro Northwest delivered over 36km of new metro rail and a new generation of fully automated trains to meet the transport demands of Sydney’s rapidly growing communities in the North West.

Sydney Metro North West Line is the first completed stage of Sydney Metro, Australia’s largest public transport project, delivering over 36km of new metro rail and a new generation of fully automated trains. SMEC partnered with Mott MacDonald and KBR as the Design Joint Venture, delivering fast-tracked design works to meet the project deadline.

This project required the use of innovative construction methodology to meet project challenges, including achieving 100 years’ infrastructure durability, sustainability of materials and construction methods, safety in design aspects, intense coordination with various services, consideration of long-term maintenance aspects and creation of iconic community integrated spaces. Leveraging the diverse expertise of over 150 specialists based in five countries, the design team collaboratively pushed boundaries to develop effective solutions.

Facilitating design, construction and commissioning of rail infrastructure

Partnering with Mott MacDonald and KBR as the Design Joint Venture (DJV), SMEC provided civil engineering, structural, electrical and public utilities design on the final phase of the project, Operations, Trains & Systems.

SMEC was engaged in association with Mott MacDonald and KBR as the Design Joint Venture (DJV) for the Operations Trains & Systems (OTS) package. The DJV provided civil engineering, structural, mechanical, electrical and public utility services. Fast-track design works were undertaken over 24 months, using approximately 150 employees.

The OTS package included the design, construction and commissioning of rail infrastructure:

  • 23 kilometres of new track and eight new elevated stations
  • Civil, electrical, structural and services infrastructure
  • Integration of 13 kilometres of existing railway track and five stations
  • New maintenance and stabling yard for 22 trains

A new generation of fully automated trains to meet transport demands

Completed during 2019, Sydney Metro Northwest delivered over 36km of new metro rail and a new generation of fully automated trains to meet the transport demands of Sydney’s rapidly growing communities in the North West.

In its first year of operating, Australia’s first fully accessible railway carried more than 25 million customers on more than 155,000 services, these figures have only expanded with a continued high customer satisfaction rating.

It’s often been said that technology is only as good as its user… In this case, I believe it was an optimal combination of talent with digital technology to develop a working environment that nurtured and enabled design innovations, ultimately allowing us to optimise precast construction.”
