SMEC’s locally based teams in Ethiopia have been engaged by the Ethiopian Roads Authority to consult on the construction supervision of the Asseb Corridor Road Project.

This vital road project will connect landlocked Ethiopia with neighbouring Eritrea’s Asseb Port, enhancing import and export trade and providing long term economic and social benefits for both countries.

With road construction commencing in early 2021, SMEC’s role comprises reviewing the previous design documents and supervising the construction of works. Set to be completed by 2024, this significant project will upgrade a current gravel road to deliver a 72km road, comprising 60km flexible asphalt and 12km concrete pavement.

Road rehabilitation, in both urban and rural areas, is high priority for the Government of Ethiopia. Construction, repair and upgrade of roads greatly improves transport reliability, increases capacity, delivers faster travel times and improves safety.

SMEC’s transport team based in Ethiopia are delivering this project, supported by our regional offices in East Africa.
