SMEC and GHD won Gold in the Collaboration for Project Excellence category for the Logan Enhancement Project (LEP) in Queensland. The SMEC and GHD Design Joint Venture (SGJV) designed the upgrade of four kilometres of the Logan Motorway and 10 kilometres of the Gateway Extension motorway. The LEP is an outstanding example of ingenuity and collaboration to overcome significant engineering challenges and deliver a vital upgrade for Queensland. See further details about the project below.
Additionally, SMEC and its partners Mott MacDonald and KBR received a High Commendation in the Innovation Design award category for the Sydney Metro North West Line – Operations, Trains and Systems.
At an individual level, Sarah Board, Manager, Water, Dams & Hydropower (NSW/ACT) was recognised with a High Commendation in the Champions of Change Female Leadership category.
Logan Enhancement Project | (SMEC GHD Design Joint Venture (SGJV)) | Gold Award – Collaboration for Project Excellence
SMEC and GHD are proud to receive the gold award for collaboration for project excellence on the Logan Enhancement Project (LEP).
The LEP was delivered and managed under a Design and Construct Contract between Transurban Queensland and CPB Contractors and its designer, the SMEC and GHD Design Joint Venture (SGJV).
The LEP involved upgrading four kilometres of the Logan Motorway and 10 kilometres of the Gateway Extension motorway, and was designed to improve safety and reliability, reduce travel times, enhance connectivity to key residential and business areas, and futureproof the network.
Due to a shared key objective to ‘keep the road users moving,’ detailed design was substantially completed in a fast-tracked 48-week period, enabling construction to begin early. The project exemplifies how successful collaboration can result in the best project outcomes when based on strong and trusted relationships.
This award recognised the critical nature of open and successful collaboration on significant infrastructure projects.
Sydney Metro Northwest – Operations, Trains and Systems (OTS) | (SMEC, Mott MacDonald and KBR) | Highly Commended – Innovative Design
The Sydney Metro Northwest – OTS project has revolutionised the public transport system in Sydney, delivering Australia’s first fully automated passenger service and representing a benchmark for quality of infrastructure. The Design Joint Venture (DJV), comprising SMEC, KBR and Mott MacDonald, delivered three key design innovations for the detailed design including novel pile design, precast station box system and implementing a soil-structure interaction approach. These innovations were supported by the JV utilising Building Information Management (BIM) technology to facilitate the successful delivery of the project through system-wide interdisciplinary coordination.
The Detailed Design included eight new metro stations; three underground stations, three new open-cut suburban stations and two new elevated stations. The DJV was also responsible for train stabling maintenance facilities, 36 kilometres of new metro track, overhead power systems and precinct civil works and car parks.
The innovations led to overall design excellence in managing the challenges of the project and resulted in cost savings, efficiency and sustainable outcomes.
